A new product has been designed to provide a universal tubing tong back-up assembly that prioritizes safety, durability, and cost-effectiveness over traditional cam-style friction bite back-ups.

This innovative design accommodates all tool joint connections from 60.3mm to 139.7mm with a single set of multi-size back-up dies, eliminating the need to flip back-ups or change dies for different tool sizes.

Developed with the goal of improving safety, this assembly addresses the high risk of hand injuries—common during tubing tong operations on service rigs—ranging from pinched fingers to crushed or amputated hands.

Our new tubing tong back-up assembly significantly reduces these safety hazards while enhancing production efficiency and reducing costs.

Product Benefits

Eliminates the need to flip back-ups for tool joint connections; only top tubing tong dies need flipping. Minimizes the use of snipes, pipe wrenches, Calco wrenches, and compound wrenches, reducing associated hazards. Always ready to break or make tool joint connections; can also function as a backup wrench.

Faster make-up on larger connections (114.3mm to 139.7mm) compared to open-faced tongs/back-ups. Equipped with a hydraulic mini-booster for greater backup bite force, useful for high torque connections or weak rig hydraulic pumps.

Self-centering design ensures an even bite at all times, preventing crimping and extending die life with more surface area. Visual indicators confirm rams are fully retracted, and positive energy isolation is in place for maintenance. Zero-drip hydraulic couplers prevent air introduction and hydraulic spills.

Spring-mounted assembly allows adjustability for all connection/upset dimensions. Universal mounting bracket assembly is compatible with all major tubing tong manufacturers and models. Easily disassembled into three pieces for handling using dove-tail body design and retainer pins.
